Tips from our dermatologist

Elian Brenninkmeijer

Our skin is our biggest organ and thus a very valuable asset!

Hi! My name is Elian and I am the mother of 2 daughters; Anaïs and Eléonore. So I am dealing with children’s skin on a daily basis. Besides being a mom I am also a dermatologist with a PhD in atopic eczema at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. Currently I am working as an all-round dermatologist at the Oosterwal Centrum in Alkmaar, the Netherlands.

Just like Jochem and Sjoerd I am surprised by the lack of quality in mainstream baby care products. So I am happy to collaborate in the development of new baby care products and support with my background and knowledge. If you have any specific question feel free to contact me. You can fill in the questionnaire below.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Tips van Elian

Tip from Elian: soak and smear

Taking a daily shower is potentially bad for your skin. My tip: “soak and smear” The cold winter weather of the last few months has resulted in a dryer skin. The combination of cold weather and our love for taking a daily shower is the perfect recipe for an extremely sensitive skin and eczema! Should we shower

Tip from Elian: Cradle Cap

What Dandruff is to us, is Cradle Cap to babies. It is a light form of Seborrheic dermatitis: a yellow, oily rash, which often results in an irritated, red, flaking scalp with many sebaceous glands. It can appear on your head, eyebrows, crease between the nose and cheeks, behind your ears and on the chest.

The baby skin

Our skin is our biggest organ and thus a very valuable asset! The baby skin is very vulnerable and has to adapt to its new surroundings outside of the mother’s womb. The skin of a newborn feels soft and tender. Everything is new; not only the hugs of mom and dad, but also the feeling of clothing, water and care products. How the skin responses to this differs per baby because every skin is unique. The type of skin, just like the color of the eyes, is defined by genetics. Some babies have a sensitive skin which therefore reacts strongly to environmental influences. This might result in dry skin, eczema, diaper rash and berg.

Skin Care

Because our skin is our biggest organ it deserves to be taken care of. Just like brushing your teeth twice a day. Nowadays we tend to take a bath or shower on a daily basis. We often clean our skin with soap that washes away our natural skin oils. After we dry off our skin, we often forget to moisturize the skin in order to put back the natural oily layer on top of our skin.

Especially during winter the skin tends to feel dry, taut and itchy. Therefore it is important to keep our entire body hydrated after a shower or bath. Depending on your skin type, you can use a moisturizer such as milk, ointment, cream or oil.

If you are suffering from eczema or any other skin disorder, it is best to contact your GP or dermatologist for the right type of moisturizer. So cherish your skin and take good care of it, as well as your babies’.
